DesignMD is a catalogue of design systems converted into a format that AI coding tools can understand and apply directly. It uses the emerging DESIGN.md format to describe a product’s visual language, including colour, typography, spacing, layout, component styling and other design rules in structured plain text.
Rather than asking an AI to recreate a particular aesthetic through prompts or screenshots, designers and developers can give it a DESIGN.md file as context. DesignMD currently catalogues more than 100 brand-inspired systems, which can be searched, compared and copied into tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf and Google Stitch.
It also provides an MCP server, allowing agents to search the catalogue, retrieve a complete design specification or compare different systems without leaving the development environment. The resource is particularly interesting as an example of design systems becoming machine-readable context: design intent can sit alongside the codebase and be interpreted directly by the agents building the interface, rather than existing primarily in a separate design tool.
